After a limited time engagement to Broadway, A View From The Bridge had its last show yesterday at NYC’s Cort Theatre. The Broadway run was a smashing success; it received numerous positive reviews and featured an impressive cast of big Hollywood names such as Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson. It swept New York City off its feet having completed a total production schedule of 81 performances and 30 previews from January 24, 2010 through April 4, 2010. A View From The Bridge (tickets) topped theater sales charts and received media coverage from well known sources such as National Public Radio and “The Late Show with David Letterman”. Although fans were hopeful that the play would extend its 14-week run, A View From The Bridge ended on schedule. Check back here for the latest information on any future production runs!

NPR’s show “All Things Considered” covered a story on A View from the Bridge on February 11, 2010, interviewing cast members Liev Schreiber, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Hecht, and director Gregory Mosher. Jeff Lunden, the All Things Considered reporter, describes the play as writer Arthur Miller’s attempt to take Greek tragedy and give it an American twist. He says that like a real Greek tragedy, the audience knows that main character Eddie is headed towards his own death, and they’re on their seats the whole evening waiting for it to happen. Throughout the NPR story each character gives their input on the play itself and the emotions they feel acting out such a tragic plot. Jessica Hecht describes her feelings behind the scenes as, “As we were working in this rehearsal room, what happened was, the language of the play and the way in which we interacted, as characters and as actors, was deeply agitating – in a great way. It made us very upset and it made me feel very uncomfortable. And that is because the actual story of the play was working on us.” Scarlett Johansson, who plays Catherine the niece who is the object of Eddie’s obsession, admits that her character is “not innocent.” Johansson continues, “She says in that second act, the beginning of the second act – she says, ‘I know a lot more than people think I know. I’m not a baby.’ And I think that she is, in a sense, aware of her effect on Eddie. I means, she’s young and doesn’t realize what the consequence of that is.” Lunden goes on to describe the conclusion of the play, and how Eddie’s obsession grows to be uncontrollable and taboo’s are broken. Liev Schreiber compliments Miller’s playwrite, saying that he’s astonished by how much Miller packed into his lean play, the outsized emotions. You can check out the full NPR “All Things Considered” story here in more detail. The story makes it apparent that A View from the Bridge tickets will buy you an evening full of raw emotion and an incredibly compelling plot. The successful cast line-up only adds to the promise of a truly remarkable production.

A View from the Bridge is a violent and passionate sortie into the dark side of the New York waterfront. When an Italian-American longshoreman develops inappropriate feelings towards an orphaned relative, their lives fall into a dramatic abyss. Liev Schrieber and Scarlett Johansson turn in sterling performances as an uncle and niece who enter a downward spiral when their relationship is threatened by his obsessions and her attraction to a young man. The Brooklyn Bridge loooms over their self-policed Italian neighborhood like a stone sentinel, but it isn’t enough to guard against misplaced honor and possessive lust. Enter a dangerous world where dark cold water and white-hot emotion create murderous rage in the blue-collar jungle.
A View From the Bridge tickets are selling extra-fast. Hollywood stars Scarlett Johansson and Liev Schrieber bring a gilt edge to this symbolic and intelligent production, where base instincts and ethnic honor collide hard. Take a trip down to the waterfront for a taste of building crisis in a fabled urban setting. A View From the Bridge tickets will be the best theater tickets you buy this year – guaranteed.
