NPR “All Things Considered” story about A View from the Bridge

NPR’s show “All Things Considered” covered a story on A View from the Bridge on February 11, 2010, interviewing cast members Liev Schreiber, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Hecht, and director Gregory Mosher. Jeff Lunden, the All Things Considered reporter, describes the play as writer Arthur Miller’s attempt to take Greek tragedy and give it an American twist. He says that like a real Greek tragedy, the audience knows that main character Eddie is headed towards his own death, and they’re on their seats the whole evening waiting for it to happen. Throughout the NPR story each character gives their input on the play itself and the emotions they feel acting out such a tragic plot. Jessica Hecht describes her feelings behind the scenes as, “As we were working in this rehearsal room, what happened was, the language of the play and the way in which we interacted, as characters and as actors, was deeply agitating – in a great way. It made us very upset and it made me feel very uncomfortable. And that is because the actual story of the play was working on us.” Scarlett Johansson, who plays Catherine the niece who is the object of Eddie’s obsession, admits that her character is “not innocent.” Johansson continues, “She says in that second act, the beginning of the second act – she says, ‘I know a lot more than people think I know. I’m not a baby.’ And I think that she is, in a sense, aware of her effect on Eddie. I means, she’s young and doesn’t realize what the consequence of that is.” Lunden goes on to describe the conclusion of the play, and how Eddie’s obsession grows to be uncontrollable and taboo’s are broken. Liev Schreiber compliments Miller’s playwrite, saying that he’s astonished by how much Miller packed into his lean play, the outsized emotions.
